Surfing the lesbian, gay, and bisexual Internet
by Karen A. Masulis
The Internet offers information on practically every topic and a variety of ways to meet and interact with other Net surfersespecially other lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered individuals. There are several methods of accessing information on the Net. This article focuses on web pages— home pages on the part of the Internet known as the World Wide Web.
People create and maintain a web page as a communication tool to share ideas and information on
newsgroups on same-sex couples.
One of my favorite web sites is the Queer Infoservers at http://www.infoqueer.org/ queer/qis/qis.html. This page has links to subjects like "Arts and Culture," "Health and HIV/AIDS," and "Home Pages of People Out on the Net." While experiencing one individual's home page, I found the original text for the poem recited by the gay man at his partner's funeral in Four Weddings and a Funeral-very heavy stuff.
If you have a graphical web browser, you can even view the color poster desinged for

the Net. Individuals may use a web page to describe themselves, their interests, and may even include their résumé. Organizations maintain web pages to nounce new products, sales promotions, upcoming events, membership forms, and general information.

Web pages are graphical in nature that is, they include pictures (icons) and text. Organized much like a menu, a web page includes words and phrases in special highlighted text, called hypertext, which is usually shown colored and underlined. Clicking on these with your mouse makes them work as a portal or link to other areas of the Netmost often to other web pages. These links create an interwoven tapestry, or web, of information. One page may contain links to ten other pages, each with ten links, and so on. You can start out in one web page on a certain topic, and 30 minutes later you have discovered ten new pages and possibly 100 new topics.
For example, if you are interested in the topic of domestic partnership rights and benefits, you can connect to the web home page for the Partnes Task Force for Gay and Lesbian Couples, located at http:// www.eskimo.com/~demian/partners.html. Within their page is information on same sex marriage rights, medical emergency cards, the Hawaii Equal Rights Marriage Project, and the Forum on the Right to Marry. They also include lists of same-sex couples and gay and lesbian parents organizations, and

the Project 21 campaign for educational equity spon-
sored by the Gay
and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Queer Infoservers also includes the famous Queer Resources Directory, which is located at http://
www.qrd.org/QRD/. The Directory includes links to "Queers and Religion," "Queer Events," "Queer Culture, History and Origins," and "Politics, Political News and Activism."
The Democratic Party maintains an Activists Home Page at http:// www.webcom.com/~digitals/. Among basic information that includes "The Democratic Party Platform," the "White House," the "Democratic Leadership Council" and other Democratic organizations, fellow leftwingers can read the latest liberal gossip about Newt Gingrich on a separate page titled "NewtWatch" at http://www.cais.com/ newtwatch/.
The Republican Party calls their web page "The Right Side Of The Web" and it is located at http://www.clark.net/pub/jeffd/ index.html. In addition to a color image of Ronald Reagan, the conservatives maintain links to several policy-related pages, the "Newt Gingrich WWW Fan Club," the "Rush Limbaugh Info Page," and a link to "DeMOCKracy," a political cartoon.
While there are thousands of web pages on the Net, I have tried to give you some flavor of the type of information that is available, If you are currently on-line, feel free to drop me an e-mail message at kmreboot@ix.netcom.com. Happy surf-
ing!
